History was made in the town when Nelson Mandela was released from the Victor Verster prison on the outskirts of Paarl. Before his release, Nelson Mandela was held in a house previously used to accommodate prison warders. Visits are allowed to view the house and the bronze Mandela sculpture by Artist Jean Doyl at the still functioning correctional facility. 

A visit to Paarl can’t be complete without a taste of the local wines. Full-bodied and spicy red and crisp white wines are the hallmark of the Paarl wine route.
